How to build a document based website with Microsoft Office

What you'll need before getting started

  • Internet Access
  • Microsoft Office w/ FrontPage
  • A pre-existing email address

Getting Started

Opening a free web site account

  1. Close any open programs
  2. Opening a web browser. i.e. Internet Explorer
  3. Click File | Open
  4. Internet Explorer Open Box
  5. Type in address www.tripod.com | click OK
  6. Tripod Fornt Page
  7. Once page loads, click the Sign Up button located on the top of page next to New User
  8. Tripod Fornt Free Account
  9. Scroll down to the section labeled Tripod free | click sign up
  10. Network Membership
    1. Choose Your Lycos Member Name and Password
      Note: Member name will be used for both your web and email
      Example:
      • Member Name: janedoe10000
      • Email: janedoe10000@tripod.com
      • Web Address: janedoe10000.tripod.com
    2. Tripod Member Name
    3. Personalize Your Experience by filling out the require information, be sure all field are filled out
      • Be sure this information is correct and document both you Member Name and Password for save keeping
    4. Tripod Offers
    5. Continue to scroll down and select any Lycos Registration Offers you may be interested in
    6. Continue to scroll down and select any Tripod & Terra Lycos Network Offers you may be interested in. It is suggested to uncheck all options to prevent unwanted email.
    7. Enter the confirmation code as show. This is to prevent the automation of account creation.

    9. Click on the I Agree button

    1. Once page load you browser should like something like this. If not , go back and review that all field are filled out correctly
    2. Click on Activate your account and start building!
    3. Enable Microsoft® FrontPage® extensions

      1. Click My Account | Website Details
      2. Scroll down to preferences, Microsoft® FrontPage® | click Enable

      4. Document the web address to publish you web to Tripod from FrontPage
        Example:
        • Member Name: janedoe10000
        • Web Address: http://frontpage.tripod.com/janedoe10000/
        Note: This step may have to be preformed using Internet Explorer as opposed to an alternate browser like Opera.

Prepare you documents

    Document Folder list
  1. Gather all document to be published into a single parent folder, they may be organized by using subfolder provide all subfolders are located in the parent folder. This may include word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, pictures, text, presentation documents and others.
    Example:
    • Parent Folder: My Documents
    • Subfolder: Document based website

Create your website

  1. Close any open programs
  2. FrontPage Icon
  3. Open Microsoft FrontPage
  4. Open the Task Pane: click View | Task Pane. If Task Pane is not list, click on the double down arrow located at the bottom of the View menu
  5. FrontPage New website
  6. Using the Task Pane in the New from template section, select Web Site Templates..
  7. FrontPage Website location
  8. Select Import Web Wizard | document the location of the new web | click OK

  10. Once the Import Web Wizard loads, select the first option, From a source directory of files on a local computer or network | click Browse.. | navigate to and select your document Parent folder | click Open | check Include subfolders | click Next
  11. Click Next for a second time | click Finish. FrontPage will now import the document. You may receive a dialog box indicating the Server Busy. This will happen if one of the documents FrontPage is importing is opened we another program. Select Retry.
  12. Reopen the Task Pane
  13. Using the Task Pane in the New from template section, select Page Templates...
  14. Select Table of Contents, you may have to scroll down | click OK

  16. Click File | Save | File name: index.htm | click Save

  18. Using the View Bar, select Navigation. The View Bar can be displayed by clicking View | check View Bar
  19. Using the Folder List, drop-and-drop a document into the Navigation view. The Folder List can be displayed by clicking View | check Folder List
    Perform this process for each the desired documents

Publish website

  1. Close any open programs
  2. Open Microsoft FrontPage
  3. Click File | Publish Web
  4. Enter the publish destination | click OK
    Example: http://frontpage.tripod.com/janedoe10000/
  5. Enter your Member Name and password | click OK
  6. FrontPage Publish dialog box
  7. Click Publish. This will copy all local file to Tripod's remote server.

  9. Click Click here to view your published web site
  10. In FrontPage, click Done
